Discusses Peter Szondi's An Essay on the Tragic (2002) to analyze the critic's relationship to Hegel in regard to the standing of Judaism within German idealism. Herman Cohen's refutation of the notion that Judaic law contradicts the ethical foundations of Christian German culture is the context for the argument against an intellectual tradition that supposed irrationality & slavishness of Judaism. The presumed advantage of philosophy & autonomy associated with Protestant Christianity are related to the theological writings of young Hegel. Szondi's An Essay on the Tragic (2002) claims to trace the "hidden turn" in Hegel's thinking that corrected the philosopher's earlier position on Judaism. References. J. Harwell
